Dean’s Welcome Message

Dr. Stella O. ldehen,
Dean, Law

Welcome to the Faculty of Law, Benson Idahosa University. The Faculty of Law was established in 2003 and full academic work commenced in the Faculty in the 2003/2004 Session. The Faculty is fully committed towards actualizing its role of providing sound University educationm in law with Godliness. To achieve this, law is taught in the light of social, political and economic changes, so that the course remains current and relevant in the dynamics of social change and modernity. The Faculty has an up to date E-library and also a Law Library with current books spanning all fields of law. The Faculty has produced students who made First Class Honours both at the Faculty (LL.B) and Law School (BL) examinations. The first was Miss Joy Eghogho (2008), Miss Nwidadah Sylvia (2018) and Mr. Nkwo Larry Chinedu (2019). The Faculty has won Laurels at National Moot Competitions. In 2012, the Faculty won the First Runner Up position at the Annual International Humanitarian Law Moot Competition. A Library on IHL was donated to the Faculty by the Organizers – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). In 2015, the Faculty won the Best Memorial prize at the same competition and Reference books were donated to the Law Library. In 2016, the Faculty won the First Prize at the IHL National Moot Competition in Nigeria and Team BIU was sponsored to Arusha, Tanzania to represent Nigeria. A comprehensive IHL Library was also donated to the Faculty.

Graduates from the Faculty must be able to use law as a tool for the resolution of various social economic and political conflicts in society. Thus the curriculum of this course equips them to have a clear understanding of the importance and place of law in society. This is done partly by exposing them to a broad general knowledge of relevant courses in other disciplines. Our graduates will be well grounded in Common law, Islamic or Sharia law, statutory law, constitutional law and International law that are in operation concurrently in Nigeria. They will also excel in academics, Christian knowledge and practice, have a good grasp of current information technology and be knowledgeable in other disciplines. On graduating, they would have been properly equipped to serve as advisers to government and their agencies, companies, associations, individuals and families.

Our graduates are great ambassadors of the Faculty and the University. They are employed both nationally and internationally. We also have a good
number of our graduates serving at the Bench in various states.
