Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) Unit

Dr. Omo Eguasa
Ag Director, Students Industrial Work Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)

Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme Unit is one of the Units under the Vice-Chancellor’s Office. It is saddled with the responsibility of coordination and administration of the Student’s Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in the University.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a skills training and competence building intervention programme for students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria and has the potentials of increasing the scope and variety of technical skills in the common pool or rather the general stock of skilled personnel available for the Industrial development of Nigeria. It has come to be recognised as the major avenue of bridging the gaps between the theory acquired by students of tertiary institutions and the industrial practice of the various professions and disciplines essential to the technological and economic development of our country Nigeria.

The scheme is a very important programme, involving the Students, the Universities and the Industries (employer of labour). It is funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria and jointly coordinated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the National Universities Commission (NUC). The SIWES programme has in fact become a requirement for accreditation by the National University Commission (NUC), and by other accrediting bodies such as the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).
