Benson Idahosa University Commercial Farms is a production, research and training
oriented farm. Using the most advanced, efficient and recent technologies, the farm runs
agriculture as a business entity while still fulfilling the aspect of manpower development
through agricultural training and researches.
The farm is currently in need of an experienced and result oriented Farm Manager to
effectively and productively co-ordinate the farm activities in conjunction with other
organs of the commercial Farm Management.
THE PERSON
The applicant for the post of Farm Manager must be able to show the evidence of:
i. A knowledge of food production and an awareness of customer demand, food
situation and sustainability.
ii. An organizational and time management skills.
iii. An ability to work under pressure.
iv. A supervisory skill and management ability.
v. A Numerical aptitudes
vi. A Willingness to be outside in all weather and patient to undertake all sorts of
practical, sometimes repetitive jobs
vii. Self-motivation and ability to motivate others
viii. Large scale business awareness.
ix. Marketing and negotiation skills.
x. I C.T. skills
xi. A good understanding of modern farming methods.
xii. An understanding of the ways in which farming impacts the environment
xiii. Previous hands-on farming experience and technical knowledge.
xiv. A genuine commitment to farming.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. A minimum of first degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering or HND in
Agricultural related courses.
2. Minimum of 7 years post N.Y.S.C experience in a farming related field
3. A higher degree M.Sc. or specialized course in agriculture may be an added
advantage
JOB DESCRIPTION
As a farm manager, you will need to;
– Plan finances and production to maintain farm progress against budget parameters
– Make sure products are ready for deadlines, such as auctions and markets
– Market the farm products
– Keep financial and other farm records up to date.
– Undertake practical activities, such as driving tractors, operating machinery, and
feeding livestock or spraying fields.
– Buy supplies, such as fertilizer and seeds, animal feeds, drugs etc.
– Arrange the maintenance and repair of farm buildings, machinery and equipment
plan activities for trainee staff, mentoring and monitoring them.
– Understand the implication of weather and make contingency plans.
– Ensure that farm activities comply with government regulations
– Monitor animal health and welfare, including liaising with Veterinary Doctors.
– Maintain knowledge of pest and diseases and an understanding of how they spread
and how to treat them.
– Apply health and safety standards across the farm estate.
– Protect the environment and maintaining biodiversity.
– Keep financial record up to date.
