Benson Idahosa University Pioneers Efforts to Preserve Edo Cultural Heritage through Colloquium on Edo Counting System

In a remarkable initiative aimed at addressing a pressing need within our educational system and society at large, Benson Idahosa University (BIU) hosted a groundbreaking colloquium on the Edo counting system. The event, organized by the Corpus Linguistics and Language Centre of BIU, was a pivotal step towards the revitalization of endangered languages and cultures, particularly focusing on the preservation of the Edo language.

Language, recognized as a significant factor in life, has been argued to play a vital role in education. In response to this, BIU has proactively undertaken efforts to contribute to the preservation of indigenous languages. The Corpus Linguistics and Language Centre comprises four key units dedicated to various linguistic pursuits:

● Corpus Linguistic Unit: Providing essential language data for research and methodologies for exploration.
● Mandarin Unit: Focused on learning Chinese cultural awareness and integration.
● French Unit: Geared towards enhancing the university’s international profile.
● Edo Studies Unit: Dedicated to ensuring the continuous existence and utilization of the Edo language.

The colloquium, a most significant occasion for BIU, was convened to address the plight of the Edo language, which faces the threat of extinction. Efforts from the Edo Studies Unit within the Corpus Linguistics and Language Centre have been instrumental in championing this cause.

The Vice-Chancellor of BIU, Prof. Sam Guobadia, expressed gratitude and accorded the greatest honour to the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’oba N’edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, for his profound interest in the project and unwavering support. The collaboration with the University of Benin and the Edo State Arts and Culture Ministry further underscores the commitment to preserving and promoting Edo cultural heritage.

Prof. Guobadia expressed optimism that the presentation of the work would be well-received, emphasizing the importance of preserving linguistic diversity and cultural richness for the benefit of future generations. Benson Idahosa University remains at the forefront of initiatives that contribute not only to academic excellence but also to the preservation of Nigeria’s cultural tapestry
