BIU Counseling Unit holds campaign against suicide.

Information obtained from several news reports shows that students and lecturers of higher institutions constitute the highest victims of suicide cases in the last eight months. In a bid to curtail this, the Benson Idahosa University Guidance unit recently held a campus-wide campaign against suicide, depression and cultism.

Speaking at the campaign, the Director of the Benson Idahosa University Counseling unit, Dr. Margaret Abikwi said the main reason for organizing the campaign is to create awareness and also serve as a preventive measures.

She said: “We organized this campaign as a preventive measure, if you listen to the news, you hear young people committing suicide and suicide is as a result of depression. We are saying no to depression, no to anything that will lead to suicide and also no to cultism.

She attributed the spate of suicide in the county to the state of hopelessness that Nigerians has found themselves, buy promised that the unit would help by encouraging students, supporting them, by knowing what their needs are and by helping out.

Dr. Abikwi further advised that schools should make counseling centres available and functional to curb the increase in suicide cases in the county.
