Objectives

In line with the vision of Benson Idahosa University (BIU), which is to raise academics, professionals, and entrepreneurs, who will be effective disciples for Christ by excelling in their professional fields, the Faculty of Medicine offers courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The following refers essentially to the six-year option leading to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) award.

PREAMBLE

The National University Commission Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards are to be used in the training of Medical Doctors.

Philosophy and Objective of the Discipline

Philosophy and Mission Statement
The education of health professionals must be attuned to the health needs of society. This commitment should be reflected in a competency-directed and
community-oriented approach with emphasis on social responsiveness and
relevance, and life-long learning.

Goals and Objectives

The aims and objectives of the benchmark and minimum academic standards are
to train students to become:

  1. Providers of health care to individuals and communities.
  2. Effective communicators, critical thinkers, and self-directed learners.
  3. Health advocates for the needs of their communities.
  4. Investigators of the causes of diseases and other health problems.
  5. Health educators.
  6. Knowledgeable in health policies, health management, and global health issues.
  7. Capable of conducting research
  8. Self-reliant and capable of employment generation
  9. Advocates of the multidisciplinary health care approach

The broad objectives of medical education in Nigeria shall be:

  1. To provide a sound scientific and professional platform for the production
    of doctors and dentists who would be capable of working anywhere in
    Nigeria and be acceptable by the international community;
  2. To provide such training as would equip to render
    care at the render health personnel Primary Health Care (PHC) level;
  3. To produce doctors and dentists who would satisfy internationally
    recognized standards, and who could undertake further training towards
    specialization within and outside the country; and
  4. To produce doctors and dentists with sufficient management ability to
    play a leadership role in health care delivery.

Co-operation between Medical Schools and the Teaching Hospital
The cooperation existing between the Medical School and the Teaching Hospital
will continue to be strengthened:

  1. A Common Services Committee with representation from both sides will
    be established.
  2. The Chief Medical Director will be a member of the Court of Governors
    of the Medical College
